Government Contractors & Their Audiences

Government contractors have a lot of audiences because they have a lot of stakeholders, and it’s important they communicate with every one of them:
1) Existing Customers: This one’s obvious. These are the folks paying you, so they have a right to know the status of timeline, deliverables, programs and personnel.
2) Potential Customers: These are the folks whose business you hope to have in the future, so it’s a good idea to communicate with them in mind. As you demonstrate the work you’re doing for your existing clientele you’re also demonstrating what you can do for potential clientele.
3) Employees: This audience is sometimes overlooked, and that’s a mistake. This is your team responsible for serving the client and as such you want them informed on what you’re doing as a company so they have agency in the current business and also generate new business.
4) Elected Officials: These are the people responsible for appropriating and authorizing expenditures from the public purse, which are then used to pay contractors like you. Keeping them up to speed helps ensure your client–and thus your contract–keeps getting funded at current levels or better.
5) The Public: It’s their tax dollars that are funding your activities, so it makes sense to keep them informed in the interest of transparency and accountability, otherwise known as good government. Incidentally, that’s also good government contracting.
